There is a certain exhilaration and joy in facing the darkness of life full on. That's what Miles Davis's jazz/rock fusion music has always done for me. It's defiant and true...When I want to listen to sounds that move me and shake me (without intruding vocals and lyrics) I turn to Miles. His music speaks volumes without saying a word. This tribute to Jack Johnson and other fighters and artists is a very unique listening experience. Similar to "Bitch's Brew" but more intense and darker. The big difference is the drumming and the guitar work. The key here is the improvisation and none of these musicians sounded as good as when they played with Miles Davis. The excellent improvisation allows you to listen to many takes of the same theme and not get bored because there is a difference in each take. He holds the whole thing together with his mournful, evocative and powerful trumpet. You can listen to it straight through or mix it up like I do. Love it. Great production and a very handsome box set. Probably my favorite box set of all.The complete sessions of "In a Silent Way", "Bitch's Brew", "At the Cellar Door" , "Jack Johnson", "On the Corner" and "Dark Magus" represent to me the pinnacle of Mile's music. No one but Miles Davis made this kind of music....no one will again either. But I like all of his art....from the beginning until he died. His art, his music and legacy live on.Also, if you want to know more about Miles the human being and artist I recommend the Autobiography and the book "So What'.....written by John Szwed. Davis was a flawed human being. Has there ever been an artist that wasn't?
