Description

Myth, magic, danger - fantastically fast-paced fantasy from brand new children's talent. A boy searches for his long lost father when he steps into a legend that has come to life..Jack Flint is 13. He's never known his mother and has - literally - lost his father. On a stormy Halloween he steps from his humdrum world of school, chores and getting by, into a maelstrom. Scaling the dark-walled coppice known as Cromwath Blackwood he and his best friend, Kerry Malone, find a mysterious circle of thirteen standing stones. Stones that almost seem to be breathing, pulling the boys to a place of myth and mayhem. From playing fields to battle fields they stumble into the legendary world of Temair. Here Celtic myth comes to life as Jack, Kerry and Corriwen Redthorn, the orphaned daughter of a Temair Chief, face the terrifying cunning of Morrigan, goddess of death and her servants, the Scree and the cruel, black-feathered Roaks. Their quest is fast paced and furious. Along the way, startlingly, Jack realises they are not just saving their own lives, they find clues that might lead him to his father. Stepping through portals to other worlds is a favourite device - Narnia, Harry Potter, our own DOOMSPELL and LEGENDEER trilogies - but it's one of the most successful if it's done properly, as it is here by Joe Donnelly. Drawing on Celtic myth with his own original embellishments, he knows the world he's created inside out.

This striking, eye-catching book cannot fail to stand out on the bookshelf, with a most intriguing tale that is full of creativity igniting ones imagination. With young Jack as the main character and his friends this character-driven tale sets off at an incredible pace, full of action and drama as you delve into the most exciting journey. The Redthorn sword is a magical object of such immense power as to awaken the deadly Morrigan from her slumber, thus polluting the world with evil and so are three lovable characters set off to ultimately save the world from its fate. They have `the book of ways' as their guide together with much courage and strength of character, which makes them distinctively unique and memorable. Myth, magic and mayhem this story evokes the fantasy genre in its entire that is brimmed full with magical objects, spells and enchantments that is truly spellbinding. Adorned with beautiful illustrations that brought this story and Joe Donnelly's creation to life, I was pulled into the most intensely gripping and utterly believable tale of the young adult/ children's category. After reading this first installment within a most promising trilogy I now cannot wait to continue my journey, and discover more of Jack's adventures and other works by this most accomplished author. Anyone who loves adventure and the thrill of a mission or quest will be transfixed by this innovative creation that keeps you guessing constantly, sending you on a most electrifying rollercoaster of a ride into the unknown. I loved the whole concept of this captivating object and its significance, with how good can be connected to evil in the most unlikely way. I fell in love with Jack, Kerry and Corriwen who brought such energy and individuality into the plot, which continued to develop in complexity and momentum. I would highly recommend this book to those who love the fantasy genre and who are looking for something that is targeted more towards a younger reader, either child or teenager. Being so full of drama, action and surprise this story I can grantee will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat right to the very end, being something that I was unable to put down.
